Wimbledon Village - Jurassic Park in the Forest!

Our Week in the Forest

We continued with our counting and listening skills this week, with gusto! The calendar work was postponed, as it was a little too tricky for a lot of children that were in, so educators continued to use our ‘days of the week’ approach to counting down days over the course of the week.

One of our days this week had a Jurassic Park theme, where the children used their observation, counting and listening skills to ‘find’ hidden dinosaurs within the ‘jungle’ and then, more widely around camp! Our little explorers at first ‘listened’ out for the dinosaur’s roars, searching their way through the undergrowth to find them… before they took on the dinosaur role themselves, whole-heartedly roaring and running their way around camp - almost as loud as real dinosaurs! Educators also added the same Jurassic Park plants in the mud kitchen, so that the children could create dinosaur meals, for when they became tired and hungry of roaring their way around camp.

Our little adventurers also took part in lots of counting activities, puzzles and creations. Our educators continued with the topic of bees, and the children investigated what happens when we mix colours, particularly yellow with black. The children also enjoyed an adventure walk to collect pine cones and created their own yellow string by pulling white string through yellow paint, leaving behind some wonderful patterns on our tuff tray table! We then used the pine cones and yellow thread to create bees that could be hung at home and around the forest area.

As the temperature rose, educators again created more opportunities for water play, including a self-made paddling area and our ‘water fight’ spray bottles - to practice hand-eye coordination and core balance. We also took opportunities to enjoy more mindful activities, such as using the hammock or using litter pickers to slow down and focus, whilst looking after the world around us.

Our Little Forest Folk-ers also listened to a range of action songs and stories, such as ‘The Floor is Lava’, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, ‘Five Little Monkeys’, ‘Five speckled Frogs’, ‘Wind the Bobbin Up’ and ‘Sleeping Bunnies’ - all whilst doing the range of actions wonderfully - the educators witnessed some very inventive balancing when children quickly jumped off the floor after it became lava!

Please take care in the heat and enjoy your weekend! We’ll see you next week!
