Winkworth -We’re all abuzz!

Our Week in the Forest

What a pleasure it has been to ‘bee’ in the forest this week, buzzing around with all our friends. It’s been a hive of activity. We’ve continued focusing on using tools and exploring different materials, all while learning about our smallest friends in the forest, the mini beasts!

We started the week with our insect research station. The little ones carefully donned their white lab coats and prized the insects they found, out of their nest, with tweezers and big catchers and placed them under our homemade microscopes. They were eager to phone around telling everyone what they’d discovered. Some children even ventured off into the wild to set up an insect observatory where they could monitor the little critters more closely.

We also explored a host of different tools as we created our own ladybirds. Our Little Forest Folk-ers all had a turn at using the bow saw, carefully sawing their own wood cookie. Then they used sponges to coat the wood in red paint before leaving it to dry. In the afternoon, the adventurers painstakingly applied their ladybirds’ spots with pipettes, making sure to count them and get an even number of spots on both sides.

The end of the week saw our children navigating their own forest bee hive. The little bees scooped, dropped and poured their honey, transferring it from their crystallised maze to their honey pots. And we topped that off by making our own buzzing bees, by winding our black and yellow ribbons around pine cones and adding some gorgeous leaf wings!

Amid all this, the third heatwave of the summer struck, so our little adventurers turned to nature, heading down to our very own stream for a cooling paddle and splash around with friends. Refreshing!
