Wimbledon Village - Children's Mental Health Week, looking after ourselves and our local environment

Our Week in the Forest

This Week's Theme: Children's Mental Health Week, looking after ourselves and our local environment

This week our children have had a week of ‘waste not, want not’ where we have thought about our needs, the needs of the people and the environment around us.

Recently, as our families know, we have been collecting for the Wimbledon Food Bank, and we have been thinking and learning about those people who may be finding things a little difficult at this tricky time of year. Thanks to the amazing donations, the children had to work hard to pile everything into Paula’s car so that she could take it all to a drop off point and there was so much that it needed a large trolley to leave it in as the drop off box was just too small! Thank you to everyone who was able to donate!

In the forest, the children used a lot of ‘left overs’ to create more bird feeders and more habitats, using bricks, breeze blocks, left over muesli, pinecones, fruit peelings and cores. The children also thought and talked about food that was healthy and bodies that are healthy. They learned about ‘Where our poo goes’ after the toilet is flushed and planted cress seeds in recycled jars to use in healthy salads and sandwiches at home.

And although we may be finding the rain and mud a little too much on some days, our little adventurers learned how important it has been for the local area. We walked to the spring to see it back in full flow and followed the stream to learn about river beds and erosion which create banks and waterfalls. At one point, our band of merry geographers were encouraged to sit in the quiet and listen to the sounds of the water flow, the birds and the other creatures around them.

In their free play this week, our wonderful team of creative children loved extended play around road building, mulch making, pterodactyl chasing, birthday mud cake baking, leaving mud hand prints on the tree trunks, well digging, plant rescuing, home extensions, ‘Golden’ singing, spaceship flying and rolling in the mud!
Have a wonderful valentines weekend everyone, we hope you all feel some love, from the ones you love.
