Winkworth - Exploring Small Woodland Worlds

Our Week in the Forest

What a fantastic week we have had this week!

For families who may not know, our wonderful educator Keira also works as a children’s nurse and this week she came to the forest in her uniform and showed the children how to wash their hands as well as check their blood pressure. This inspired a whole load of fun role play as the children then went to their own Little Forest Hospital! We had a fun activity making our own stethoscopes which our little explorers then used to check their patients, whilst also showing them how to keep themselves healthy.

Whilst our nursing crew were busy in the hospital helping all their patients, others were busy working in the pharmacy. There was lots of mixing and pouring lots of different medicine to then be given to the patients in the hospital to help them feel better.

In the afternoon, some of the children worked on their square lashing to make some stretchers that some of our Little Forest Folk-ers were brave enough to try it out for us!

The children explored a series of small worlds this week too, including a small woodland world where they created habitats and dens out of natural materials for the animals. There was lots of storytelling as they talked about where the animals live and what they eat.

Our small worlds needed small people, so we carefully used a saw to cut some sticks to the right length to make stick men. Using pipe cleaners we secured them together and used fabric to make them some clothes. To house our newly made stick people we created a village from building blocks, pegs, natural materials and fabric. This involved great communication, teamwork and problem solving to build our own small world community.

To make the most of the wonderful rain today, we created art and music! We used our teamwork and construction skills to set up a gutter river and raced our boats down to the sea at the bottom. We also made special rain art, sprinkling powdered dye on paper before taking it out in the rain to let the water bring it to life. We loved seeing how the colours splashed and spread over the paper!

The small worlds and role-play continued with roads. We used our teamwork and construction skills to use planks, logs, stumps and tires to build roads and bridges for cars to drive along before deciding to be the cars ourselves and use our roads as an obstacle course, maximising our teamwork and gross motor skills.

What an excellent week, we hope everyone has a lovely weekend!
