Wimbledon - The First Signs of Spring

Our Week in the Forest

The signs of spring have really started to show in the forest this week. At Little Forest Folk Wimbledon we have noticed the daffodils peeping out, then bumblebees starting to appear and even some little bunnies hopping around. It really is a hive of activity in the forest, and that goes for the children too!

One of the ways we have helped the animals in the forest is providing more food for them. When the weather is cold and wet we want them to have somewhere to go where they can get a little snack and some shelter from the rain. Over the past few weeks the children have been using an old Christmas tree to make a bird feeder. They have sawed the branches, whittled some of the bark off and then have taken then cores out of some apples to pop on the branches. This has been such a great activity where the children can practice their tool skills and also provide some treats for the birds. As soon as the bird feeder was hung up, we had a visit from a very happy robin!

With the sun shining as well this week we have begun adding some more colour to the forest. The children have had lots of opportunities for painting, both their own pieces of art and also decorating areas of the forest. We have spoken about colour mixing and which colours we can make by combining others. We have also spoken about different shades, learning about lighter and darker. Whilst working on some of the decorating we have also looked at shapes and how we can make various shapes using the paintbrushes. It has been a great way to add some colour and brightness, but also learn some new information!

There have also been adventure walks to find the bear, using the “Going on a Bear Hunt” story as our inspiration. Looking at different parts of the book and putting them into our real life forest.

We have read books in our cosy tent - it’s wonderful to have a safe space to get some quiet time and listen to some of our favourite stories.

Such a fun and busy week at Little Forest Folk Wimbledon!!
