Putney Heath - Our Planet, Curiosity, Creativity and Enthusiasm

What a fantastic week it has been for our Little Forest Folk-ers as we began our new learning theme, “Our Planet.” The children have shown so much curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm as they explored everything from ancient dinosaurs to the world we live in today. Their energy and imagination have made for a truly special week outdoors!

We started the week by travelling back in time to the age of dinosaurs. One of the highlights was making our very own fossils using clay. The children used tools to press different shapes and patterns, creating unique prehistoric treasures that they were so proud to show their friends. They also made beautiful necklaces from natural materials, collecting spring leaves and other forest treasures to turn into special jewellery for one another.

During outdoor play, the children had a brilliant time with throwing and catching games, challenging themselves to land balls in baskets. There was plenty of laughter, teamwork and determination as they practiced their coordination and celebrated each other’s successes. Our little adventurers explored painting their own versions of the Earth. As they painted, they talked about the blue sea, the green land and the many different places people and animals call home. These conversations were full of curiosity, imagination and thoughtfulness about the wider world.

On Tuesday, the children experimented with leaf printing. After some trial and error, they discovered that damp leaves work best and created lovely prints to take home as bookmarks. They also worked carefully with the flower press, arranging their leaves and tightening the screws - an excellent exercise in patience and fine motor control. Later, in the mud kitchen, our little chefs were back at work creating imaginative recipes with ingredients like “five cups of flour, ten conkers and six sticks!”

Wednesday brought an autumnal treat - pumpkin pie! The children mashed pumpkin pulp, added sugar and cinnamon and enjoyed the delicious aroma before tucking into their creation. The day also featured a forest-wide pirate adventure, complete with maps, hidden treasure and plenty of laughter.

On Thursday, we explored natural and man-made materials. The children collected items from around camp, sorted them into categories and used the natural objects to make prints in clay. To round off the week, the children became map-makers, creating their very own maps of Putney Heath. It was wonderful to see how confidently they identified landmarks and shared their favourite forest spots.

Another wonderful week, we hope you have a lovely weekend!
