Our Week in the Forest
This week at Little Forest Folk Wimbledon we’ve loved to see the butterflies and bees arrive at the spring flowers.
Taking inspiration from the warm weather and a documentary about bees that some of our educators had watched, we learnt what we can do to help the bees! Earlier this year, we already planted some wildflower seeds to help create habitats for them and this week, we focused on water and a bee hotel for mining bees. We gathered stones on our adventures to and from the car park, and placed them in a shallow dish. Here we then poured water into the dish so the bees could drink and wash themselves. Bees can stand on the stones so they aren’t trapped by the water which would cause them to struggle to get out. Another day, we connected this to a tool work activity by drilling holes in soft wood logs for a place where mining bees can go. We’ve loved learning all about bees and can’t wait for some visitors!
This week has seen the beginning of longer play after dinner. We are enjoying the warm weather so much we have stayed outside all day! We took this opportunity to continue our physical development by climbing trees and scrambling on logs. We’ve built our confidence up so much that we can jump off a vertical log that’s almost as tall as us! We then thought of a challenge to take off on one leg and land with both. We’ve focused on using our hands and feet to help guide us through scrambling on the logs and our educators are very good at helping us if we ask or need it. We’re testing limits and breaking barriers to become stronger and more skilled.
Finally, a recent game we’ve loved playing is catch! There was some fencing up at the Scout Hut this week and we took it upon ourselves to play ‘catch over the fence (net)’ and we learnt how to aim, watch the ball and catch it!
Another fab week, see you all next week!
