Our Week in the Forest
We have had a wonderful week in the forest running around searching for hidden numbers on cool days and playing in the shade making clocks on hot days. We have welcomed holiday campers into the forest again and made some new friends and we have had new children join us experiencing the forest for the first time.
We have had some great tool time too. This week we’ve been learning how to use a hammer to knock in nails. We had small blocks of wood and as we knocked each nail in we had to watch out for our thumbs and fingers. Once we had knocked in 3, 4, 5 nails we then chose a beautiful length of wool to attach to one nail and then we enjoyed wrapping the wool around all of our nails creating nail art to take home.
We have also been sieving soil this week to remove stones and sticks from the mixture and preparing our seed pots for spring planting. The children were delighted to find all manner of treasures in the soil we dug up to sieve. We found 3 worms, some gorgeous stones, a few chips of old pottery - roman or victorian were the general guesses - and a big fat grub who was a little bit scary looking, it turned out to be a chafer grub which was surprising as we don’t have a lawn in our forest. We have sprinkled a mixture of butterfly and bee attracting flower seeds into our soil filled seed pots and now we wait, they should sprout soon!
Our Little Forest Folk-ers have really enjoyed building with blocks, crates, planks, tyres and sticks this week. Once we’d built our structures we got our tape measures out to see how long, tall, wide and short our buildings were.
On Cooking Friday we made a delicious lemon and coconut milk cake which had only four ingredients and was delicious.
Thanks for coming to the forest, see you again next time.
