Our Week in the Forest
This week, we all landed back on Earth to discover more differences across our beautiful home, rather than across the solar system! First, our galactic explorers had to create their own rockets, to safely land back on Earth, making sure that we had enough space food to last the trip. . Once they landed, one of the first things they discovered was how different everyone’s hair is… Even at our very small camp, our hair types were vastly different from each other’s!
This led on to some very interesting discussions where, after one very considered question from one of our curious explorers, we learned that there are 195 recognised countries around the world. We looked at the colours of different flags and during one of our circle time talks learned about the different countries that either our Little Forest Folk-ers come from, or their families and also where our educators may have originated from! We found out that in our merry little group, we come from at least 12 different countries - we were very proud of this in our group and furthered our inquiry by discussing the different languages used and different foods that we love.
Using the book ‘My Skin, Your Skin’, our educators, alongside our wonderful children, learned that not only do people from different countries and cultures have different hair, but they can have different colour skin too - and that we are ‘All the same, all different’ in our own ways. Our watchful children looked at the trees around camp and pointed out the different colours, different leaves and different sizes! ‘All the same, all different!’ Our educators linked these differences to learning about seasons, identifying different tree names and even discovering different types of weather! ️️
One of our intrepid group’s favourite songs on camp is, ‘The Floor is Lava’, so us educators decided to ask our inquisitive team if they could tell us what the difference between a mountain and a volcano was… the children were able to say what was the same and what was different, then we built a volcano of our own - on camp! Thank goodness some of us had our lava boots with us!
All this as well as creating autumn tables, pumpkin carving, race track creating, volcano colouring, wheelbarrow wielding, mud castle making and pumpkin mud pie baking!
What an awesome week!
