Morden - Adventure Walk to Cannon Hill Common

What a wonderful week we’ve had in the forest! Our little adventurers have been so busy!

We’ve been making the most of the beautiful warm summer weather and have all been hard at work sprucing up the outdoor space! This week we had a group of helpers relocate our strawberry patch into a new pink planter! This was really satisfying for the children as they enjoyed studying the roots of the strawberry plants and learnt that we have to hold them by their stems so as not to damage the roots. The end result was great and moving the strawberries also made space for our new pumpkin patch which will be ready come Autumn season! Everyone was so helpful in topping up the planter with soil, and finally, we set about planting our courgette seedlings which the children started last week. We look forward to harvesting them for use in our wild cooking sessions!

Following the intent of the week, we set off an adventure walk to Cannon Hill Common to do some research on the local area. The children sang, ran and skipped their way all the way to the pond where we fed the ducks and ducklings, reflecting on what makes a pond different from a river and which famous River is nearby. We’re all really excited to make our own pond back at the nursery and look forward to all the new wildlife this will bring to the forest!

Following the intent of ‘understanding the world’, the children also engaged in some really fun activities which explore different cultures and communities. Among these, the children made their own fans, inspired by designs from China and enjoyed an amazing activity using white crayon and red water colour to expose their names written in Chinese! The children loved seeing how their alphabet differed from ours and this was a wonderful and educational, yet magical activity which everyone really enjoyed!
