Chiswick - Music, Mud and Drama

Our Week in the Forest

What a wonderfully rich and muddy week we have had in the forest! Despite the long-lasting rain, the children showed fantastic resilience, curiosity and joy as they immersed themselves in music, stories, drama and outdoor exploration.

We began the week with rhythmic music sessions inspired by Vivaldi. The children listened carefully to the changing tempos and moods, responding with body percussion using claps, taps and movements. It was a lovely way to explore rhythm, coordination and self-expression while tuning into classical music.

Drama and storytelling were a big highlight this week too. We acted out a hibernation story together, with the children eagerly taking on roles and exploring how animals prepare for winter. Through movement, imagination and discussion, they demonstrated a growing understanding of seasonal change and empathy for living creatures.

We also used drama to brainstorm and safely explore our feelings whilst finding ways to calm down. An educator read out a small problem and our little adventurers used plush toys and their gloves as talking puppets. This way, we were still playing but also understanding and observing each other with different perspectives and emotions.

Our adventure walk took us on a wintery exploration of the outdoor environment. The children searched carefully for signs of winter, noticing changes in trees, leaves, weather and wildlife. Even the rain couldn’t dampen their enthusiasm - they continued to play, explore and investigate, embracing the forest school spirit of learning through all weathers.

Storytelling flowed naturally throughout the week. Our Little Forest Folk-ers listened intently and created many imaginative stories of their own, drawing inspiration from well-known fairy tales. Their ideas were full of creativity, problem-solving and confidence as they adapted familiar characters and plots into new adventures.

It has been a joy to see the children learning so deeply through play, movement, music and nature. Thank you for ensuring they come prepared for outdoor learning in all conditions - it truly allows them to make the most of every experience.
