Our Week in the Forest
Remembrance Day, festivals and exploring the autumn environment…all in a week's work at Little Forest Folk Wimbledon!
With Remembrance Day this week, our children showed their respects by making their own wood cookie poppies. They sat and sawed the branch to create a round shape, then used paints to decorate them. We spoke about the meaning behind the day and how we can thank those for helping us, show our support through wearing poppies and also having fun making our own!
We have also been investigating some of the wonders of autumn in the forest this week, noticing lots of exciting mushrooms! One group of children saw an abundance of jelly mushrooms growing on a tree and decided they looked like ears! We then researched them and found out they are known as “jelly ear” or “wood ear” mushrooms. The children examined the size and shape and found it very funny to find out they are named after our ears!
We have spent time expanding our bug hotel too this week, using saws to cut wood cookies for them to climb on, finding leaves to turn into mulch and adding some mud for the worms. There has been lots of interest in finding the biggest worms and some of them have been as long as our forearms!
This was all very exciting for our week and we ended it with a festival where the children made tickets, wristbands and decorations! We had a stage to perform on and lots of instruments to play all day long!
We hope everyone has a fab weekend!
