Our Week in the Forest
What an up-and-down week of weather we have had! We’ve had some impressive tarps built this week by Vasiliki and Dan, ensuring we always have shelter in this tricky weather. The frequent rain has meant there has been full puddles for splashing, jumping and a muddy part of our camp has become a perfect area for muddy digging and wet mud moulding 🪵 When the rain got a little too torrential, we headed inside for an adventure in the palace museum.
PSED: This week we have had a big focus on self regulation and emotion identification. Modelled around the scheme ‘Zones of Regulation’, we explored our emotions daily by pairing them to corresponding colours.
Irem led a wonderful yoga session on the palace grounds. We challenged the children with stretches, poses and took the opportunity to recite positive affirmations about ourselves, helping your little ones take ownership of their wellbeing.
We used clay and gemstones to create magic kindness wands. Our Little Forest Folk-ers flattened their clay and used a cutter to cut out a perfect heart. They attached a sturdy stick and there they had it - a wand to cast spells of kindness! 💓 This was a perfect opportunity to discuss the acts of kindness we practice in our day-to-day life.
On the grounds we spotted a perfect tree to become home to a bird nest. Children collected twigs, leaves and branches and fashioned a large circle, space for a whole family of birds. This was a great chance to watch them work towards a shared goal and practice team work and collaboration.
Dan led a great phonics and maths activity in the snack circle. We made beats by clapping, slapping our chests or stamping our feet and then matched the beat with the syllables of our names. We counted the syllables one by one until everyone knew how many their names contained!
We had an array of construction and loose part play this week. We did a forest favourite, cornering off camp with caution tape, hard hats and even walkie talkies. Children worked together to build all kinds of constructions with building bricks and blocks. They used crates, tree stumps, large wooden planks and pallets to create structures, some just like Stone Henge!
We worked as a team to scavenge around the Walled Garden in search of Winter Elements. With our checklist in hand we headed into the grounds to search for little robins and fallen leaves.
Children practiced their planting skills with a pumpkin seed planting activity. Although too early in the year for ideal pumpkin planting conditions, it was a great opportunity to use up an old pumpkin and repurpose its contents.
