Our Week in the Forest
Hello Spring! πΈπ»π
Spring has officially sprung! This week, we welcomed the busiest season in the forest, along with the hungriest mini-beast of all! From Monday to Friday, we embarked on the wonderful journey of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and its magical life cycle. From a tiny egg to the most colourful butterfly, our lovely book of the week tells of new beginnings and a challenging yet fun journey to keep growing and never stop learning. Indeed, this week has been full of helloβs and goodbyeβs for Little Forest Folk Fulham. We were delighted to welcome three new lovely friends to our forest and also gave the warmest farewell and good luck to two of our amazing children who will embark on their next adventure. ππ±
This week, we revisited our song Days of the Week and continued focusing on Literacy skills.
We read our theme book daily at circle time and let the children recall the key events and the sequence order. While going through the caterpillar's food intake, we practised 'fruit fingers', and both the big and the little ones showed excellent number understanding. Every day, our Hungry Caterpillar and Mrs Strawberry soft toys came along with us to the forest and joined the children's adventures! One of the most popular activities was our messy tray. We filled the tray with soil from the compost bay and hid fruit toys. Everyone loved looking for the caterpillar's favourite food and worked out which day he ate those indulgent pieces of fruit! ππππ
They also loved playing with our Very Hungry Caterpillar story stones and retelling the whole story. And because βhe was still hungryβ, we cooked the most delicious meals in our mud kitchen and celebrated an afternoon tea party. Everyone participated preparing lots of mud chocolate cakes, mud sausages and mud-cakes. From smashing, whisking, mixing and baking in our crate-oven, this week the mud kitchen has been as busy as ever! Then, we served the food and pretended to enjoy the most indulgent treats without the stomachache! π§π°ππ
We started our week with a giant Very Hungry Caterpillar tunnel at camp made from pallets. While most children had lots of fun going through the hula-hoops, climbing and riding the caterpillar, others painted the minibeast's ears using paintbrushes and purple paint. We continued practising physical skills by completing obstacle courses, climbing trees and dancing to music and our favourite songs! They especially loved wearing butterfly wings and pretending to fly around camp, looking for caterpillars on leaves and trees, as well as mini-beasts under logs! πππͺ²πͺ΅π
Our theme book also inspired us to enjoy lots of arts and crafts. Our little and big children loved modelling clay to make balls of different sizes. From the tiniest egg on a leaf, the longest caterpillar, to the biggest and fattest one! We also used butterfly-shaped playdough cutters, and some children made magic wands with their clay butterflies and sticks to represent the last stage of the caterpillar's awesome life. They loved painting them with their favourite colours, mixed with golden paint and with their most special magic wands, gracefully made their beautiful butterflies fly around camp! Following the childrenβs interests, we continued doing lots of toolwork. We cut wood slices using a bow saw and then our little explorers painted them using golden paint. They had lots of fun hiding and finding each other's golden coins on camp! π¦π₯π
What a beautiful week full of golden treasures and learning through fun and play in the forest! π³πΈ
