Our Little Forest Folk-ers love all types of weather! Rainy days bring out the slugs and snails and super enhance our mud kitchen activities, on blustery autumn days we make and fly kites, catch falling leaves, and investigate mushrooms and fungi, springtime brings blooming flowers, buzzing insects and bright green leaves busting from their buds, and summer temperatures allow us to put on our wellies and head out for river walks through the shallow, slow flowing, waters of the Crane River.
Our first riverwalk of the season was very exciting and eagerly anticipated! We splashed our way up stream; we found an old key, saw some ducks, ducked under the low hanging branches of the chestnut trees, found a crab and so much more. One of our little ones, River, as well as all the other children, were delighted to realise that “River was in the river”!
Meanwhile in the forest we learnt more about our oceans, the creatures who live in the ocean and about vehicles that explore and travel our oceans. The Yellow Submarine song, pirate songs, Row, Row, Row Your Boat etc all made it onto our stage and were sung throughout the days. Ships, and subs were created with crates and planks as explorers set off to find giant squids and humongous whales.
Suntan lotion, hats of all sizes and water consumption taught us all about keeping well and healthy in hot weather as our educators and older children role modelled for our younger and newer children how to keep cool, refreshed and hydrated. With the sun shining so brightly we also had shadows to investigate. Where is your shadow? How big is your shadow? Which way is your shadow facing? Shadow creatures created by clever educators linking their hands and fingers ignited the children’s imaginations. As you can see we have had a fantastic week!
