Wimbledon Village - Happy Bugs & Potato Harvesting

Our Week in the Forest

It has been a very busy week at Little Forest Folk Wimbledon Village, with a huge range of activities and adventures! We started the week by making a bug hotel under the large fallen tree at the edge of camp. Once the construction was complete, the children set about putting up a sign to invite prospective guests to rent a room. They used a real drill, with the help of Sam, to screw in the sign, squeezing the trigger and applying force to drive the screws into the trunk. We hope to have lots of many-legged visitors over the coming months and will be expanding our bug hospitality offering week by week to keep up with demand from different species.

Another great feature of this week was the great potato harvest of 2025! (Or the beginning of it, at least!) We started in the garden outside our indoor space, where we have been growing many vegetables and herbs. One evening, some of the children harvested potatoes from the first bag, gave them a wash and handed them over to our neighbours, Two Teaspoons, who will make them into a wonderful dish for us to eat. Over the next two days, the children in the forest got to rummage in the other grow bags and found up to 40 potatoes in each one! They counted out the treasures and made a pattern with them on top of the compost.

We also spent a lot of this week talking about the exciting changes we will all be experiencing in one way or another very soon, as some of our friends move on to new schools and pre-schools. We talked about what routines these children might discover in their new settings, and even acted out some of them with story times and playful ‘writing practice’. When the children weren’t in their starring role as school kids, a group of teddies stepped in and children arranged them so they could all see the chalkboard. On Thursday, we invited children to bring in items of uniform and each child was given a ‘school badge’ either for their new setting, or for Little Forest Folk, as we are happy that not everyone is leaving us! Everyone showed great pride in their badges, and our leavers could very easily identify which one belonged to them.

We hope you have a fantastic weekend, keep enjoying the weather (if you haven’t melted yet) and we will see you next week for more forest fun!
