Our Week in the Forest
One of the activities that our children loved this week was making some “stress” balls for sensory play. They got to fill balloons with squishy items that would feel nice if they needed to explore their sensory wants and needs. Each child carefully used a filter to put their filling inside the balloon and watch as it turned a magical rainbow colour inside. Once they were full, they could then decorate them with faces and feel calm when they were squeezing them in their hands. It was a great way of explaining different types of calming techniques to our Little Forest Folk-ers and explaining that we can use them to help us feel better if we are upset or frustrated during the day.
Another sensory activity we had was building a volcano! The children all got involved using their hands to create a mud hill, adding water to make the mud stay in place. They then added different ingredients into the middle to form the basis of the volcano experiment. Finally, they added the activator (vinegar) and watched as the volcano came to life! We could hear it fizz, watch it flow and feel it froth as it ran down the side of the mud hill. So much excitement for everyone!
At Little Forest Folk Wimbledon, we have also really focused on independence and allowing the children to take part in more tasks. One of these is independent snack sharing. The children helped to put the snack on the table and then share it out. They knew to wait until there was space to go up to get snack and took it in turns to grab a tasty treat. It was great to see the children get so involved in this and enjoy the responsibility of the task at hand.
It has been a great week full of fun and excitement!
