Winkworth - A Trip to FairyLand

This week in the forest we have been focusing on experiencing the natural materials in the Arboretum and seeing what we can make with them. The children have been using all their senses to explore the nobbly oak leaves, the smooth acorns and spiky pinecones. We started our week with a nature gathering adventure walk. With a labelled bag in hand, our adventurers set off to look for natural treasures. Then, in the afternoon, they stuck them to cardboard using PVA and rolled up strips of masking tape to make portraits of their favourite people, mummy and daddy of course!

Later in the week we had a trip to fairyland. The children donned beautiful butterfly wings, chose their fairy names and worked together to make a gorgeous natural tree collage. They even had the bright idea of using litter pickers to collect more natural materials to add. What helpful fairies! We topped the day off by creating our own acorn forest fairies, complete with leaf wings.

Then we turned to the forest dwellers that are experts at crafting things out of natural materials, our local song birds. Just like the birds, our adventurers had a go at building nests out of twigs and bracken. We also had lots of fun playing in a huge feather-filled nest that appeared in our garden. The nest became a home to all the birds before turning into a construction site for our diggers. We made sure to saw some wood cookies too so we could make some little owl bird models.

We can’t wait to see what creations our little artists will come up with next week!
