We began the week by celebrating National Owl Awareness Day, diving into the fascinating world of owls. The children loved learning interesting facts about these nocturnal birds, from their exceptional hearing to their silent flight. Using natural materials gathered from around camp, they created their own owls - each one unique and full of character!
Our main focus this week was butterflies. We’ve been spotting them during our adventure walks and learning all about their life cycle, body parts and the wide variety of butterfly species. The children created beautiful butterfly collages and experimented with natural materials to make their own butterflies, carefully thinking about symmetry, colour and shape. Their observational skills have really blossomed as they eagerly scanned the landscape for fluttering wings.
Throughout the week, imagination and creativity were in full flight. On our walks, the children discovered a clearing they declared the perfect stage. It quickly became the setting for a royal performance, with kings, queens and knights putting on a grand show for their teachers and friends. Back at camp, collaborative play took over as we built a pirate ship, setting off together to search for hidden treasure. We also constructed helicopters and ambulances, as children took on the roles of doctors, paramedics and pilots, helping those in need.
Our creative energy extended to practical skills too. We’ve been practicing safe tool use, chopping elder branches with loppers and transforming them into beautiful beads. Our Little Forest Folk-ers then proudly strung these into necklaces and bracelets - an excellent opportunity to support both fine motor skills and independence.
It’s been a week of joyful learning, rich in imagination, teamwork and nature exploration - we can’t wait for more adventures next week!
