Winkworth - A Week of Celebrating Artists and How Paintings Make us Feel

Our Week in the Forest

This week has been a celebration of artists and how their paintings make us feel a colour from our zones of regulation.

First up was Van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting. Here we decided the painting made us feel in the green zone - happy and ready for the day. We explored this painting by sketching with the image beside it and also some chestnut and yellow leaf tool work. We made a hole in the chestnut with the palm drill and then added a stick for a stem and yellow leaves for the petals.

Tuesday - we lost ourselves in the Starry Night picture. The children enjoyed some sensory star activities which included looking up through telescopes at a starry sky, as well as printing star pictures. Time was spent here looking at the shapes and the colours that were hanging in the tree which enabled us to be calm and reflect in our green zone. We also used some shaving foam that the children dropped blue and purple colouring into and then used a cotton bud to make the swirls like the picture. They then pressed some paper on the top to transfer the picture.

Wednesday - saw The Scream picture by Edvard Munch. Our little adventurers had lots of fun in a photo booth, using the camera to reenact the face, drawing on feelings we might feel in our red zone to get the perfect expressions. We also used paint dabbers to make a dot picture inspired by the painting.

Thursday - was themed on the Water Lilies painting. We made a bridge to climb over and set out some water lily coloured crayons to create water colour paintings. We also looked at some different media such as paint, chalk and wax crayons.

Friday - we were in the yellow zone with Picasso. Here the children cut different shapes with their picture and then arranged it and stuck it down to make their own Picasso-inspired creations. Our little artists got to observe some different layouts and decide which they liked the best.

Everyone also had great fun every day expressing themselves on a great big easel using colours of paint that were used in the painting inspiration for each day.

What a fabulously arty week, we hope you all have a great weekend!
