Wimbledon - Balancing Bridges and Navigating Trees

Our Week in the Forest
This week, we began with an adventure walk, where the children explored the natural environment by balancing across a bridge and navigating through tall, slender trees. They showed curiosity and problem-solving skills as they examined loose branches, making predictions about their size before observing an educator safely remove them. In the meadow, the children collected feathers of various sizes, carefully selecting the largest ones for their collection. While some children took part in the walk, others remained at base camp, enjoying extended story sessions and creative expression through pastel painting. By the end of the morning, the painting area was full of colour, reflecting their enthusiasm and imagination. Later, the children practised turn-taking and coordination while using a newly introduced tether ball set, demonstrating growing confidence in sharing and group play.

A further adventure walk incorporated a treasure hunt led by educators, where our Little Forest Folk-ers followed a map and used measuring tools to explore their surroundings. They measured tree trunks using rulers and by comparing arm spans, developing an understanding of size and circumference. At the end of their journey, they discovered a “treasure” area, where they combined imaginative play with recalling numbers learned along the way. In the afternoon, children explored language through rhyming activities. They practised identifying and creating rhyming words, eventually composing simple poems. These playful exercises supported early literacy skills and encouraged creativity.

The children also experienced imaginative role play, including a ferry journey where they acted out real-life scenarios. This activity was enriched with storytelling elements, including weather changes, allowing our little adventurers to explore narrative and social interaction. Tool use and construction were another focus this week. With guidance from educators, children revisited hammering skills to construct a tarp tent. They demonstrated an awareness of safety rules and worked collaboratively to secure the structure. This activity led to further exploration, including sensory play as they discovered static electricity while playing inside the tent.

Throughout the week, our little ones engaged in a variety of mathematical learning opportunities. They measured their height using tape measures and recorded the results, comparing differences and discussing concepts such as taller, shorter, and equal. In another activity, they explored weight by designing small floating boats, considering how added materials affected how the boats moved in water. Physical development and teamwork were further supported through games such as tennis and football. Children practised coordination, perseverance, and turn-taking, with some challenging themselves to maintain rallies. Safety awareness was reinforced through structured play boundaries introduced by educators.

The children were also presented with a problem-solving challenge: to set up a swing independently. They worked together to use ropes, knots, and carabiners, demonstrating teamwork and resilience. With minimal adult assistance, they successfully assembled the swing and took great pride in using it.

Finally, the children showed care for their environment by filling bird and bee baths with water and searching for insects, ensuring they had suitable conditions during the warm weather. As the weather continues to warm up, we kindly ask that children come prepared with a sun hat and a full layer of sun cream. Our educators will be able to top-up sun cream throughout the day, but if your child has a preferred type, please ensure it is clearly labelled and packed in their bag.
