Our week in the forest
What a fantastic week we’ve had at Little Forest Folk Putney Heath! The children have embraced every moment with energy, creativity, and curiosity - whatever the weather has thrown at us. From sunshine to showers, it certainly hasn’t dampened spirits and it’s been wonderful to see the children so engaged in their outdoor learning.
This week, one of our biggest highlights has been our journey back to the Jurassic period. The children became budding explorers as they set off into the forest to search for dinosaur tracks. They discovered a range of prints, from the fierce T-Rex to the enormous brontosaurus and showed great enthusiasm in identifying and discussing what they found. Like true professionals, they recorded their discoveries in journals, using sticks and their fingers to paint and trace the tracks. Some children even created their own maps, carefully marking where different tracks were spotted - such brilliant attention to detail!
Our dinosaur-themed activities continued with the ever-popular obstacle course. The children balanced, climbed, see-sawed and swerved their way around camp, all while pretending to be different dinosaurs. We saw fast-moving velociraptors and slow, stomping brachiosauruses, with imaginations running wild. A standout moment was when the children worked together to build a ladder to escape any “dinosaurs on the loose.” They gathered sticks and helped secure ropes, showing fantastic teamwork and problem-solving skills.
We’ve also enjoyed a wide range of creative and sensory activities throughout the week. The muddy dinosaur sensory tray was a big hit, allowing the children to explore textures and get hands-on (and wonderfully messy!). There were also some fantastic dinosaur portraits created, alongside opportunities to relax and recharge in our calming canopy zone.
In addition to our dino adventures, our little adventurers explored movement and play with colourful scarves, watching them float and fall through the air. The mud kitchen has been busy too, with lots of imaginative “pancake making” and creative cooking taking place. We also enjoyed a lovely forest picnic for our afternoon snack - such a calm and happy way to spend time together.
Finally, a warm welcome to Dan our new Acting Deputy Manager at Putney Heath. It’s been a joy having her join us this week, and she is very much looking forward to meeting you all!
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to more forest adventures next week! 🌿
