What a special week we have had here in the forest. We have felt the high heats creeping back up.. but we haven’t let it dampen our spirits. Instead we put into practice all the things we have learnt about keeping cool. Hats on, shaded areas and lots and lots of water and ice play. We’ve been as cool as cucumbers!
This week we have touched on Understanding the World 🌍 🥼 We focused on both domestic life as well as the ever changing natural life we have around us.
🧪 🥼 Our tuff trays became medicine labs. We pretended to be doctors and scientists, using pipettes and scoopers to mix and concoct potions. Children created a big truck with crates and tires, which influenced some quite dramatic role play. An accident on the road! Oh no, man down, Georgia’s broken her leg! Children fetched equipment from the Doctors Den and fed Georgia medicines whilst acting out bandaging up her poorly leg. Once she was back in full health, sadly they made her do the whole event again! After a few bumps and falls, our forest doctors became pro’s at tending someone back to health. 🏥
🦁 🦒 One day our pile of loose parts became a safari truck. Each crate was used as a seat for another excited passenger. Would we see tigers, koalas or rhinos? 🦏 We extended this play with an art and design craft. Children used card to create their own set of binoculars. Perfect to spot a lurking lion with! Our little explorers used focus and precision to roll the card and attach it in place until they were perfect cylinders. After attaching some string, they were ready to take straight back to the safari truck, ready for some animal-spotting.
Children explored the offerings of the natural environment with nature bracelet making. On one of our many explorations of the Walled Garden, children followed our ‘no picking and no licking rule’ incredibly well. Do we pick trees that are still growing? Goodness no! 🌱 Instead, our little ones scoured the ground to find fallen petals, leaves and twigs. Once collected, they stuck these onto their sticky bracelets. Something very special about activities like these is that we regularly do ‘real’ bracelet making with pre-created beads and charms. Both activities have rich learning opportunities but we find a lot of joy in showing children they can create something equally as beautiful using natural and repurposed materials. 🌺
