Wimbledon - Making a Bench to Sit in the Sun and Read

Our Week in the Forest
This week we have experienced the positivity the sun and spring brings us.

We continued our tool work project that we started last month, making a reading bench! We had already sawed a pallet into two pieces which we then problem solved with our educators to think about how we could attach it together and which design we wanted to make - a picnic style bench or a park bench? We decided on a park bench, and it worked wonders! We worked with our trained educators and made sure to wear our safety equipment. We were able to explain the different parts of the hammer and the hazards it may bring if we weren’t wearing our gloves and goggles. Making the bench brought more challenges as the angle was new… we had to hammer horizontally rather than vertically! We were able to play around with our body position and use our power and accuracy. Eight nails later and we had attached our two pieces together and made our bench, which we loved sitting and reading on all afternoon in the sun!

With the sun and the spring season in full swing, we have enjoyed using our walk ins and outs as adventure walks with resources. This week we focussed on the bluebells and using rulers to measure them! We learnt the parts and features of a ruler and how to use one. Starting off with comparing which was taller - the daffodil or the ruler? Then adding to the concept of how many cm the flower is, turns out some of the daffodils required more than one ruler as we found ones as tall as 43cm! We loved practising our number recognition and discussing what we found with our friends. On an adventure walk to the bluebell meadow, we created a tally chart on our clipboards to record our findings. We learnt the freedom of using each column with purpose and recording information in our own way as well as learning what it means to record.
