Putney Heath - Celebrating Our Beautiful World For Earth Day

Our week in the forest

What a wonderful week we’ve had enjoying the beautiful sunshine and celebrating Earth Day! The warm weather created the perfect setting for a day full of outdoor learning, creativity, and meaningful experiences with nature.

This week has been wonderful welcoming our families for our stay and play sessions. We began our day with our much-loved dance freeze game, giving the children a chance to move their bodies, express themselves, and share lots of laughter with their friends. It was a fantastic way to start the morning with energy and excitement before heading over to Monkey Camp. Here, the children explored a variety of engaging areas, including the mud kitchen, where imaginative “cooking” and role play were in full swing. Others chose to spend time in the reading area or explore the wider environment, showing curiosity and independence in their play.

In celebration of Earth Day, we enjoyed a special wild cooking activity. The children worked together to make an oaty date cake filled with hidden fruits and vegetables. This provided a great opportunity to discuss where our food comes from. The children shared ideas and learned that food can grow in many different ways - on trees, above the ground, and even underground. They showed great focus and teamwork while scooping, pouring, and chopping ingredients. We also introduced measuring cups, helping the children understand how ingredients can be measured by volume rather than using scales. The finished cake was enjoyed during the afternoon snack and was a big hit with everyone! 🥮🍀

Creativity continued with our unique painting activity using scented tea bags. The children explored a variety of teas, including strawberry, camomile, and green tea, noticing the different colours and smells each one produced. They used sticks of varying thickness to experiment with marks and textures, creating some beautifully expressive artwork while engaging their senses. We also ventured out to the Heath, where the children collected soft leaves and natural materials to create their own nature crowns. They carefully weaved together leaves, feathers, and string, demonstrating patience, creativity, and pride in their creations.

Thank you to everyone who joined us - it was a pleasure to share part of your child’s day with you. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity for children to feel proud of their environment and for parents to see firsthand how they learn through play and exploration.

Throughout the day, the children also engaged in a range of imaginative activities, including a dinosaur tea party, superhero role play, and construction fun in the mud kitchen. Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to another exciting day tomorrow! 🌸✨
