Our Week in the Forest
It’s been a busy week at Chiswick as we’ve been continuing to discover new changes to the forest now that spring is here. 🌷🌼🪻
We went for a colour walk early in the week, looking for each of the colours in the rainbow. We allowed ourselves to only count natural things and found all of the colours in flowers! Some flowers had more than one colour, and we noticed how some have stripes inside to show the bees where to find their food - how clever! We were also amazed at really how many different kinds of green we found, and held up different shades of green to others for comparison. 🌈🌱🌳🐛
We’ve also been looking at lifecycles, with focus on frogs and butterflies. We can’t quite get close enough to the river to see if we can spot any tadpoles, but we’ve seen a number of blue butterflies, which has encouraged us to look for caterpillars! We have been really interested in insect ID as well this week, and have discovered hoverflies and beetles, and even some millipedes beneath an old stump! Next week we’re going to be looking at the lifecycle of a bird, and see if we can spot any nests! 🪺🐸
Now that the weather is drier, we have been building obstacle courses to test our balancing and jumping skills. This week, we created a ramp for going up and down, and we wanted to make steps up to a bridge so we worked out which logs were shorter and which were taller. Then we put them in order from shortest to tallest so we could climb up to the top! We worked out how to add a teeter-totter by putting a log under a plank of wood. Next week we’ll see if we can try some wobbly logs for an extra challenge because this is too easy!
We’re looking forward to even more spring adventures next week!
