Putney Heath - Wildflowers, Cress & Sweetpeas

We have been enjoying the glorious weather this week. Our mud kitchen was full of rainbow blocks of ice to make ice soup, shaved ice salad, ice beignets and frozen paninis. We set up a pop up restaurant which was very popular, with lots of diners coming in to sample our delectable dishes.

We also had our vets on hand to take care of some very unwell animals. They worked well under pressure, operating on seals, applying bandages to sloths and looking after donkeys with broken legs.

We had so much fun exploring our sensory trays, where we made igloos from oats, tents from fronds of ferns and cabbages, all of which were fragranced with sprigs of rosemary.

We started by talking about the people who look after the planet, and all the things that live on it. We call them “conservationists” and we talked about how their job is to look after all the things that live in nature, from the animals to plants.

We also explored some seed planting. We discussed the amount of soil to put in the pots and what seeds need to grow into plants. The children had a selection of wildflowers, cress and sweet pea seeds to choose from. Most chose wildflowers. They then added labels with their names and what they had planted. Something lovely to bring home and care for.

When the forest became too hot, we retreated to the clubhouse for some refreshing cold drinks and some cooling water play. The children absolutely loved running through the sprinkler!
