Wimbledon -Tadpoles in the Frog Pond!

Our Week in the Forest

What a wacky week! Our Little Forest Folk-ers showed their ability to adapt to any situation with a laugh and a smile as we had a combination of unpredictable weather and some surprise scout hut days!

We began the week with lovely sunshine in the forest and continued the progression of our tool work skills. We put on our safety gloves and whittled the thorns from bramble cuttings before drilling holes down the centre to make beads for necklaces. Later in the week, we consolidated these skills when we hollowed out elder beads using tent pegs as drills. It was great to see how we remembered the steps to prepare our materials and then ourselves, to use tools safely. In the end we made ourselves some fabulous jewellery and cool elder bead snakes! 🐍

We also spent two days outdoors at the scout hut due to our minibus needing some TLC, so we took advantage of the chance to visit the nearby frog pond and check out the tadpoles. Last time we saw them they were just small black wiggles, but now they’re much bigger and some even have tiny legs! This gave us a chance to revisit our prior learning on frog life cycles and we loved seeing this stage before they become full adult frogs 🐸. Then, (as if our walk couldn’t get any better!) we found newts swimming in the other end of the pond! We wanted to know why the tadpoles and newts didn’t hang out together and found out that sometimes newts try to eat tadpoles (ew!) so the tadpoles tend to hang out somewhere else (smart!)

Another fun activity saw our educators setting up a spider web maze for us to climb through and explore how to move and balance our bodies through small spaces - it was tricky but we all made it through! 🕸️

Near the end of the week, we were excited to be back in the forest. We laughed at the rain, put our hoods up and immediately found every puddle to jump in. The mud was perfect for our mud kitchen and we tricked the educators by shaking bushes nearby to get them all wet 😂 We love the wet weather! 🌧️
