Chiswick - Creativity, Imagination and Animal Adventures

Our Week in the Forest

This week in the forest has been full of creativity, imagination, animal adventures and learning more about our families.

We began the week by building a shelter for the small-world dolls using oak leaves and twigs. The children showed great teamwork and communication as they decided where to place each leaf or stick, testing different ideas until the shelter was just right. This activity encouraged problem-solving, sharing and lots of imaginative play, as the children pretended their dolls were safe and cosy inside.

As part of our learning about autumn, we explored how the season brings changes to animal habitats. The children noticed the falling leaves, cooler air and we talked about how animals get ready for the colder months. Using printing foam blocks, the children pressed animal shapes into paper, proudly creating their own colourful animal prints. This led to wonderful conversations about where animals such as monkeys and whales might live, what their homes look like and what food they might enjoy. It was a lovely way to combine creativity with learning about the wider world.

On Wednesday, we celebrated Gorilla Day. In the morning, the children gathered leaves from the forest floor and used them to create their very own gorilla masks. Carefully gluing the brown leaves onto paper plates, the children worked with focus and determination, completing their masks splendidly. Once finished, they wore their creations proudly, stomping through the forest and making playful gorilla sounds. It was wonderful to see their confidence and imagination shine as they brought the gorillas to life!

Thursday was International Daughters Day, but in our setting we decided to celebrate every child’s family. Our Little Forest Folk-ers brought in family photos and decorated special picture frames using natural materials. They took such care in arranging the twigs and leaves, knowing their frames would hold something very special. These frames will now be displayed as part of a beautiful family tree in our room - a lovely way to appreciate and celebrate all the families who are part of our community.

It has been a joyful week in the forest filled with creativity, teamwork and special moments that connected us to both the natural world and the families who make our community so special.
