Putney Heath - Exploring and Creating!

Our week in the forest

What an incredible week it has been in the forest! The children have been busy exploring, learning and creating, making the most of the sunshine and the great outdoors.

We started the week with a wonderful Valentine’s Day theme. Our Little Forest Folk-ers enjoyed painting heart-shaped cards using a new sponge technique, mixing pinks, purples and whites to create vibrant and textured designs. They also explored our “petal potion,” scooping red petals into jugs filled with pink-tinted water that looked just like strawberry milkshakes. There was so much excitement as they experimented with colours, textures and pouring techniques, everyone thoroughly enjoyed this sensory and creative experience.

The day continued with an imaginative dinosaur hunt, inspired by the familiar “We’re going on a dinosaur hunt” song. Children transformed into dinosaurs, running and hiding around the camp, exploring the space and laughing as they escaped the “ferocious” dinosaurs. It was a joyful mix of movement, imagination and collaboration - it was wonderful to see their energy and confidence shine.

Tuesday brought the excitement of Pancake Day, filled with teamwork and hands-on learning. The children made pancakes from scratch, carefully cracking eggs, sieving flour, adding milk and mixing everything into a smooth batter. Afterward, they went on a forage walk to collect sticks for the fire and learnt how to build it safely using a fire starter kit. Back at the clubhouse, everyone helped prepare toppings such as strawberries and chocolate chips before cooking the pancakes over the outdoor fire. The children loved tasting their creations and even enjoyed licking syrup straight from their plates! This experience combined practical skills, outdoor learning and collaboration in a memorable and very tasty way.

Later in the week, we celebrated the Lunar New Year by making coins to place in envelopes decorated with Chinese symbols. This activity allowed the children to explore a new culture while practicing fine motor skills, attention to detail and creativity. It was inspiring to see how proud they were of their work and how thoughtfully they engaged with the activity.

The week concluded with a riverside adventure near Putney Bridge. Our little adventurers observed the local flora and fauna, explored the shoreline, discovered shells, splashed in puddles and even fed the ducks with muesli. They also enjoyed throwing large rocks into the water and experimenting with movement and balance along the riverbank. To round off the day, we completed some Lunar New Year–themed recipes, blending outdoor exploration with cultural learning in a fun and interactive way.

It has been a week full of curiosity, creativity and adventure. Thank you for supporting your children’s learning at home and encouraging their exploration in the forest. We look forward to welcoming our sessional children back after the half term and can’t wait for another exciting week of activities, discovery and fun!
