Our week in the foresT
This week has been full of curiosity, creativity and exciting outdoor adventures! The children have enjoyed a wonderful mix of sensory exploration, hands-on Mathematics, imaginative play and practical life experiences, all supporting their learning and development in meaningful ways.
In our forest sessions, the children thrived outdoors in our beautiful spring-like setting. They explored oobleck, discovering how it can behave as both a solid and a liquid. Using spoons, scoops and containers, the children enjoyed filling beakers and experimenting with the gloopy mixture, observing how it moved and changed shape. They also had fun using pipettes with water, adding flower petals and exploring how the liquid traveled through the pipette, developing their fine motor skills and scientific curiosity.
Imaginative play continued to flourish with the return of toy dinosaurs to the forest. The children chased each other around the camp with loud “roarsome” roars and pretend sharp teeth, building stories and friendships along the way. Story time remained a highlight, with books about tigers, elephants and other animals sparking conversation, laughter and imagination.
Earlier in the week, our little adventurers took part in a cooking-inspired activity, making chocolate playdough with cocoa powder. They measured ingredients, mixed them carefully and watched as the mixture transformed into a smooth, chocolate-scented dough. Once ready, the children explored the playdough by rolling, shaping and creating pretend cakes and treats. This activity encouraged counting, comparing quantities, fine motor skills and teamwork.
Our Mathematics exploration continued with a spring scale activity and measurement games using LEGO and toy food. Children experimented with a simple spring scale to compare the weight of different objects - observing which items made the container stretch more and using words like “heavy” and “light”. They also measured and compared the length of LEGO towers and toy food, developing early measurement skills, problem-solving and mathematical language while collaborating with friends.
A particularly exciting highlight was preparing for and building a fire. Our Little Forest Folk-ers collected dry branches, inspecting each stick carefully and carrying bags back to the clubhouse. They practiced splitting kindling, strengthening fine motor skills and tool knowledge, before working together to start the fire safely using cotton wool and fire starters. The day ended with a delicious treat - warming wraps on the fire during afternoon snack - adding a practical, hands-on life skills element to their learning.
It has been fantastic to see the children so engaged, curious and supportive of each other throughout the week. Their enthusiasm, imagination and teamwork have made every activity memorable, it has been a joy to watch them explore, experiment and grow in confidence both indoors and outdoors.
Thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to more exciting learning adventures next week!
