Chiswick - Puddles and Raindrops

Our Week in the Forest

What a wonderful week we’ve had in the forest! From sunshine to rain, every day brought something new to explore, create and discover together. The children showed such enthusiasm and imagination as they played, learned and celebrated the beauty of nature all around them.

On Monday we began with puddles and raindrops, but that didn’t stop our fun one bit! The children embraced the rainy weather with big smiles, splashing through puddles and keeping warm under the tarps. During our morning session, we continued our work on phonics - practising our letters through playful tracing, rubbing out and hunting for them in the sand. It was such a joy to see the children recognising familiar sounds and taking pride in their progress. Creativity flourished too, as we explored clay modelling, sculpting all sorts of wonderful creatures. Some children even made their very own Gruffalo, complete with knobbly knees and terrible claws! In the afternoon, laughter filled the forest as everyone joined in some lively imaginative play, pretending to be chickens - clucking, pecking and giggling their way through the day. What a cheerful start to the week!

By Wednesday, the forest greeted us with clear blue skies and sunshine. Our Little Forest Folk-ers were full of energy and excitement as they moved freely between different areas of play and exploration. Painting was a big highlight of the morning - we experimented with number sponges and brushes, mixing yellow and red to discover a bright, beautiful orange. The moment the colours blended was met with shouts of “It’s orange!” and delighted smiles all around. Later, we created our own “snow” by mixing soda with shaving foam. The children traced line patterns with their fingers and sticks, wrote their names and even drew the Gruffalo while singing the Gruffalo song together - it was so heartwarming to see their creativity come alive.

As the morning went on, the children lifted logs and explored the hidden world beneath them, gently discovering worms and woodlice and learning how to care for our tiny forest friends. On one tarp, children crafted nature-inspired collages using leaves, twigs and petals, while others got muddy in our imaginary forest café, serving up pretend coffees and cakes to their friends. In the afternoon, the book tent became a cosy retreat, where children shared their favourite stories and enjoyed quiet moments of reading together under the trees.

Each day this week has been filled with curiosity, discovery and joy - from messy play to mindful moments, from phonics to forest adventures.

We can’t wait to see what next week will bring - more adventures, more creativity and even more magical moments together under the trees! 🌿✨
