Twickenham - Exploring Patterns in Nature

We’re so happy to be back for the new term and pleased to see our sessional friends return to the forest and we feel excited to move back to our Parakeets area. Our beloved plane tree is looking leafy and green, and we are enjoying watching the mummy and daddy birds collect twigs and leaves to make their nests.

This week we are exploring patterns in nature. We observed snails and the whirls on their shells. We counted the spots on ladybirds and noticed the texture of stones and the veins on leaves. We felt inspired to make our own colourful patterns! We drew a whirl like a snail’s shell and using buttons, we covered the swirling line with buttons of alternating colours. We also made a spotty octopus where we covered its tentacles with colourful spots.

We also formed a rock band this week and had a wonderful time making patterns of sound. Some of our friends were playing their air guitars whilst growling a “rum ba rum rum” rhythm, while the saxophone players tooted a “root a toot” beat. The educators were only allowed to play the triangle and they played it fantastically with their “ring ta ting ting” jingle.

Another focus of the week has been learning how there are different ways people talk to each other. Some of us speak different languages and some of us talk using our hands, and we had a wonderful time learning a few new ways to say please, thank you and sorry.

We’ll be back next time with more stories of our adventures in the forest!
