Twickenham - Volcanoes!

Spring is finally here and we are all glad the sun is staying out later each day in the forest. Our forest is awash with new species of wildflowers and the plane tree is beginning to show new growth, along with the raspberry bushes which are starting to flower!

This week in the forest, we welcomed our holiday camper friends who we are super thrilled to be spending time with. We showed them our favourite activities and games in the forest, from digging deep pits, sloshing around in the mud, painting the forest, going on insect hunts, making structures in the sandpit, and challenging each other to paper airplane races.

One of our highlights for this week has been learning about volcanoes. It was very interesting to learn how volcanoes form and why they erupt. Some volcanoes are active, some are dormant, and many are extinct which means they haven’t erupted since a million years ago…that’s a really long time! We looked at our world map and chose a country to learn about the volcanoes that may be lurking there. We found Mount Erebus to be very interesting as it’s one of the two active volcanoes in Antarctica. We learned a bit about Mount Etna and Mount Fuji as well.

Then, we thought of a wonderful idea where we would make our very own volcano. First, we took a small water bottle and using a bit of clay we fashioned a simple, yet very realistic, looking volcano with grooves and bumps. Then we took bicarbonate of soda and utilising our amazing counting skills we scooped some of it in the bottle. Finally, we poured vinegar into the bottle and watched the volcano erupt with fizz and bubbles.

We’ve had such an interesting time learning about volcanoes this week and we can’t wait to see what we’re going to learn next! Until then, have a lovely weekend and we’ll be back with more stories of our adventures in the forest.
