Wimbledon - Beautiful Smelling Jewellery!

This week has been busy. With great weather on offer the opportunities for exploration continued to grow! Much like the flora in and around our base camp.

Over the course of the week, the children have investigated and explored our base camp at a lower level by hunting for mushrooms! The children used a mushroom log and information books to learn about the different features and species of fungi. Did you know the Grifola Frondosa’s fruiting body can grow as large as 1m? It has been spectacular to see what difference a couple of days makes for their size; using a tape measure the children have been able to practise their maths and identify numbers. Which led to a big obsession of numbers and counting… all the way up to 20!

Another bonus of the drier weather is the wood can dry out which makes it perfect for sawing! Both bunny and fox children have enjoyed the opportunities to saw, drill and create using Elder. We are lucky enough to have an elder tree on site, which we are able to manage sustainably. The children love tool work and there were so many smiling faces in this activity. They sawed cylinders and drilled holes to thread ribbon through to create a necklace or bracelet! A beautiful smelling piece of jewellery!

Finally, another highlight from this week, the children showcased their true creativity and imagination through movement. Some enjoyed singing and dancing to music, others enjoyed creating shows in the theatre with a superhero theme. With so much space to use in base camp the children were able to continue their shows throughout the days in different locations.
