Our week in the forest - St Patrick's Day

Sweet role play in the forest

Sweet role play in the forest

A lovely week in the forest In Wimbledon

We've been celebrating St Patrick's Day, making shamrocks galore with paint, paper, sticks, leaves and anything else that inspired us.

We've also spent a lot of time discussing the change in the weather that has come about with the arrival of regular Spring days. We've been creating little flower gardens with flowers we've brought in then once we've decided where we want our flower garden to be and how we want it to look we have been doing some gardening of our own. Seeing the children's faces as they concentrate so hard on their fine motor skills to pick up tiny seeds and plant them carefully in pots is absolutely beautiful.

We've been feeling quite creative this week so have been painting some lovely works of art. We've wrapped paper around trees then have painted the trees with our depiction of Spring. We've spread paper along the ground and have worked together to create collaborative works of art....open to interpretation as to their subjects!

We've also been a little consumerist this week and have set up a few shops. We've been selling capes, flowers and willow crowns to all of our friends. A sweet role play to see and a good way to work on our maths skills.

It's been a week for adventure with our taking small groups of children out of our site for adventures around the wider nature reserve. The children really enjoyed the excursions and the chance to find new and exciting gems within nature... even a small pond suitable for some stone skimming!

Finally for cooking this week the children made cottage pie, served with baked courgette and parmesan 'chips' and a celery gratin. Healthy and tasty!

Chiswick open day

Chiswick open day

We had a great day at our first Chiswick open day. It's so exciting to be opening a new setting and lovely how many of our new Chiswick families heard about us from you telling them how much fun your children have in the forest - thanks!

Don't forget next week is Easter so we will be closed on the bank holidays Friday & Monday. We hope you have some lovely plans for family fun - Kew Gardens are doing some fabulous Easter activities so if you are free, pop over there for some healthy chocolate activities.

As it's starting to warm up, children may no longer need their thermal snow boots soon.  We highly recommend warm wellies. These wellies are neoprene based which makes them extremely flexible for easy running in, plus they have great grips and are much warmer than standard wellies.

Dressing for the weather

We are starting to need less and less layers - exciting!

  • Thermal layer - M&S have some great thermal long sleeve tops and leggings
  • Fleecy trousers
  • Thin jumper
  • Thicker fleece/wool jumper
  • Thick fleecy zip up jacket - Mini Boden have some fab warm shaggy jackets on sale
  • One pair of socks
  • Wellies/thermal boots/snow boots

Next week in the forest

Next week in the forest we are going to continue playing around with the theme of Spring but are of course going to be introducing some Easter fun and games into the week. We will be talking about bunnies and eggs and may even do some egg decorating and hunting of our own.

Have a lovely weekend!
