Putney Heath - "What Does the Earth Smell Like?"

We have all had a delightful week in the forest revelling in nature, weather, and birdsong.

Obstacle courses were created with logs, thick branches and planks, the builds were mastered, altered and enhanced over the 5 days by our Little Forest Folk-ers. Balancing from log to log testing our strength whilst bridges over lava fields, shark infested waters and the land of the dinosaurs were all enthusiastically imagined.

The soil in the forest was just the right consistency of earth and water as we mixed and stirred with our hands, scoops and sticks. What does the earth smell like we all wondered? It smells like worms and brownness we found out as we sniffed deeply. We had marvellous days playing in the mud, painting with mud, feeling the cool sensation of muddy hands and squishing mud tightly between our hands to create mud balls for ice cream cones and meatballs and spaghetti for dinner.

The teddies hospital was open in the forest this week, and all the poorly animals were attended to by doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers and surgeons. Listen to his heart, we were told, as we gathered round a sick teddy. A stethoscope was placed in ears as the teddy’s heart was monitored. Medicine was prescribed and animals were tucked into beds.

Curiosity about clocks, numbers and time in general led to the creation of wrist watches amongst the group and soon cardboard discs with numbers carefully drawn on were held in place on narrow wrists with rainbow elastic. “It’s handwashing time” a child announced as she checked her clock, “it’s lunchtime” another said looking at her watch, “tidy-up time” another child called out, and so the day was measured.

What a wonderful week, we hope you have lovely restful weekends!
